Where do you go on vacation?
William, an eight-year-old boy in San Francisco, vacations in Tahoe every year with his mom, dad, twin sister, and older brother.
In Tahoe, William loves being in nature: hiking, riding bikes, and outdoor rock climbing. William says the people in Tahoe are nice. “Like when we go on hikes with our cousins there, and we get lost, they give us directions.”
William says that when Tahoe people visit San Francisco, they go to the Golden Gate Bridge and Pier 39. They also visit the wax museum or the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, two of William’s favorite places.
This summer, William’s family went to Germany to visit his first au pair. Then they went to Paris, where they saw the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Louvre.
“Paris is a big city, a worldwide city, and it has a lot of famous landmarks,” Williams says. Just like in Tahoe, people in Paris are nice because they helped William’s family when they were trying to find their way somewhere.
William’s family went to London, where people are also nice because they gave directions, too. Are people in London happy? William answered, “Yeah, because they have a wax museum.”
Insights from the Urban Playground
Wax museums are a thrilling part of city life, if you’re into that sort of thing.
And famous landmarks—they’re everywhere in cities! You have the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Space Needle in Seattle, the French Quarter in New Orleans, the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, and the Navy Pier in Chicago.
If you’re in a new city, you might lose your way. People in cities who know where they’re going can be so nice, showing you on maps or phone apps how to get where you’re trying to go.
